Green Koncepts

Green Koncepts is an eco-friendly energy solutions company. We believe that each individual can have a personal impact on the environment through energy conservation. Our aim is to educate - families, parents, children, educators, students, employers and employees to enable them to better understand their energy usage and through awareness, to encourage the practice of energy conservation with the solutions that we offer.

Energy Conservation

To quote the late Sir Winston Churchill, “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference”. At Green Koncepts, we believe that taking little steps to adopt energy-smart living today will help to make a BIG positive difference to our environment tomorrow. Here are some energy facts to start with :

Power

The Watt (W) is the international standard unit for power. A typical household incandescent light bulb uses electrical energy at a rate of 25 to 100 watts, while compact fluorescent lights typically consume 5 to 40 watts. All electrical appliances have a power rating label that tells you how much power they consume.

Energy

Energy (kWH) is the amount of power consumed or generated. For example, if a 100 watt incandescent light bulb is turned on for one hour, the energy used is 100 watt-hours or 0.1 kilowatt-hour. This same quantity of energy would light a 40-watt bulb for 2.5 hours.

1000 Watt-hours is the same as 1 kilowatt-hour and is the amount of energy equivalent to a steady power of 1 kilowatt running for 1 hour.

The monthly electricity bills you receive shows you how much energy you have used in kWH. This number when multiplied by the tariff rate gives you how much you have to pay in $. Therefore, the lower your energy usage, the lower your electricity bills!

Carbon Footprint

A carbon footprint is the impact that your actions and lifestyle have on the environment measured in terms of carbon dioxide in kilogrammes or tonnes.

The term usually indicates the amount of emissions generated through the actions of people, what is important is not only the total amount of energy use, but also how the energy was produced in the first place (e.g. from fossil fuels or renewable resources).

Carbon footprints can either be contributed by direct emissions such as travel and transportation, electricity usage; or indirect emissions from the products and services that we consume.

Reducing Your Carbon Footprint

You can play your part for the environment and reduce your carbon footprint in the following ways:

  • Reduce energy waste in your daily electricity consumption through energy-smart living
  • Adjust your air conditioners to 25 or 26 degrees to be energy efficient
  • Turn off and unplug stereos, radios, TVs, and DVDs when you leave for holidays. These appliances have a stand-by function that uses energy even when they are turned off.
  • Close doors to unused rooms trapping heating or cooling in rooms in use.
  • Consider switching to energy-saving bulbs. Compact fluorescent light bulbs use about 75 per cent less energy than incandescent bulbs.
  • Clean your air conditioner filters regularly, making sure they are dust free. Energy is lost when the air-cons have to work harder to draw air through dirty filters. Ensuring that your air conditioner filter is clean can save 5 percent of the energy used.
  • Make it a habit to recycle glass, metals, plastics and paper.
  • Plant trees or have indoor plants to offset your carbon footprint
  • Select the most energy-efficient models when you replace your old appliances. Look for the Energy Star Label - your assurance that the product saves energy and prevents pollution.
